Our research, conducted in the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London, falls under the broad heading of cardiovascular mechanics. It is chiefly concerned with atherosclerosis, a disease characterised by the accumulation of fat, cells and fibrous proteins in the arterial wall that underlies most heart attacks and strokes. We are also developing novel methods for detecting heart failure, a condition that tends to have poor outcomes because it is often diagnosed late.
